Emigration Canyon
Emigration Canyon is a township and canyon in Salt Lake County, Utah, located east of Salt Lake City in the Wasatch Range. Beginning at the southern end of the University of Utah, and just east of the Hogle Zoo, the canyon itself heads east and northeast between Salt Lake and Morgan Counties.
Emigration Canyon was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1961. It is significant in Utah history, as this is where the Mormon pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. As Brigham Young looked over the canyon, he declared, "This is the right place. Drive on." These words have become famous in Utah history.
Emigration Canyon was
originally an escape from the summer heat for the early settlers. With time a collection of modest homes sprung
up by those looking for a simple, quiet lifestyle. Although it remains an escape from the city
and heat, the recent developments there are hardly modest. Emigration Estates and Emigration Oaks
feature magnificent million dollar estates with large lots and terrific views.
Emigration Canyon is especially appealing to those that
commute to the University of Utah, Research Park or the hospitals.
There are two restaurants in Emigration Canyon. Ruth's Diner a Utah tradition since the 1930's
has a beautiful patio with live music in the summer. They serve classic American fare and has a
very popular Weekend Brunch. It looks like they have done some renovation over the spring of 09.
The Sun and Moon Cafe is a small low key place that has live music from time to time.
This is a very popular canyon for road cyclists with it's moderate grade. There is great hiking and snowshoeing right up the street.
