Ways to reduce waste in your home
- Buy things in recyclable containers and recycle them at Recycle UT. (And, don't forget to donate!)
- Don't over dry your clothes. Clean the lint filter and dry full loads. When possible, hanging clothes outside in the sun or on a drying rack are by far the most efficient and easier on the fabric.
- Check your toilets for leaks; leaks can cause 30-500 gallons per day in water waste.
- Switch to recycled toilet paper. It costs about the same but uses much less water, trees, and chlorine pollution that it takes to produce new product.
- Replace paper towel usage with reusable towels.
- Only wash a full load in the dishwasher, don't use the pre-rinse cycle and air dry when possible.
- Set the temperature on your refrigerator between 38-42 degrees. Clean your condenser coil at least twice a year for maximum efficiency. Avoid cluttering, as this doesn't allow for efficient circulation.
- Stop buying and drinking water in plastic bottles. Buy an aluminum water bottle to eliminate plastic waste and prevent possible health issues.
- Turn down the thermostat a few degrees. Add a layer of clothing or a blanket for comfort. A space heater can be a great solution too.
- Stop receiving unwanted catalogs. Go to www.catalogchoice.org to put an end to this waste.
- Wash your clothes in cold water or reduce from hot water to warm. There are some great detergents specific for cold water washing that work great.
- Avoid buying clothes that require dry cleaning.
- Keep your tires properly inflated to avoid wasting gas.
- Use only re-usable shopping bags. Once you try them, you'll love them. They are so much better and nicer than plastic!
