Sugarhouse

Sugarhouse, the largest community within Salt Lake City boundaries, was originally named in 1854 after a sugar mill that was built and never made it to successful production.  Sugarhouse became a center of industrious activity with a variety of factories built to produce the goods of a growing population.

The original state prison built in 1853 and demolished in 1951 was located where Sugarhouse Park is now.  Westminster College a distinctive Sugar House learning institution was first opened April 12, 1875 and was originally known as the Salt Lake Collegiate Institute.  Sugarhouse is the home of the two oldest golf courses in the city, Forest Dale and Nibley.

Sugar House is located five miles southeast of the center of Salt Lake City.  It is not an incorporated community and is in fact a part of Salt Lake City.  The 'boundaries" of Sugar House have never been agreed upon although it primarily located between 1300 S. to 3300 S. and 500 E. to 2300 E.

Sugarhouse has become quite a trendy community and is very popular with young and old alike.  There is plenty of shopping and other services making this a center of activity.
